There’s No Joy In Mannywood
May 7, 2009
Upon hearing that Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez tested positive for drugs, my jaw immediately hit the floor and my heart sank. You’re kidding, right? The Dodgers, having just one day prior set the Major League Baseball record for consecutive home wins to start a season at 13 and counting, 21-8, and in first place
However, two sources said the substance Ramirez tested positive for was a gonadotropin. Major League Baseball’s list of banned substances includes the gonadotropins LH and HCG, which are most commonly used by women as fertility drugs. They also can be used to trigger testosterone production. Testosterone is depleted by steroid use, and low testosterone can cause erectile dysfunction
Ramirez tested positive for the substance during spring training, then had another portion of the same urine – a “B” sample – tested again more recently, and it also was positive. Major League Baseball notified Ramirez of the second positive test after Wednesday night’s Dodgers victory over the Washington Nationals. Ramirez admitted to having taken the substance and declined to appeal. His 50-game suspension begins Thursday and is not scheduled to return to July 8th.Dodgers CEO Jamie McCourt released the following statement: “We share the disappointment felt by our fans, our players, and every member of our organization. We support the policies of Major League Baseball, and we will welcome Manny back upon his return.”
I guess, in reality, he did take something he wasn’t supposed to. But, it’s kind of sad to think that what he was prescribed was not even for “on the field “use but personal, very personal as it turns out. And do we always know what we ingest into our bodies, honestly. If you do, you’re one in a million. But I digress. See you later this summer, Manny. Late
The O Word
May 4, 2009
Well, folks, me and my comrades have been away for a bit. But alas, we are
back, locked, cocked, and ready to unload about all things concerning the letter
O. Huh? I know, you’re saying “Dude,” you supposed to be “bringing the heat” not
sitting out “baking” in it. Yeah I know. But for practically sake, it seems
appropriate considering recent news blurbs.
Now, you would think the most important “O Word” would be that of our 44th U.S.
President Barack Obama… you would think. No, no… in our fair society, that all
important “o” would belong to our beloved “Octo-Mom” Nadya Suleman. Now, I am not
going to pile on like everyone else. Do I think she’s a little delusional… yeah.
Do I think she’s doing her children a disservice… perhaps. But does it justify
what is being done to her by press and neighbors and the like… absolutely not.
See , because of that, as my roommate so diligently pointed out, we are not
allowed to have an opinion about what she does. We cannot lament what we cannot
control. We are going to be on the hook anyhow when all is said and done. So, in
reality, the more press it garners, the more legs her 15 minutes of fame sprout.
Let her live her life people. I think we all have focused so much on the woman
behind the kids that we have all forgotten about the bigger picture… more
specifically the octuplets survival. We are so shortsighted by our jealousy that
we think about our own self loathing and garner resentment that we are not her,
Sounds crazy, but you would want eight infants if you could get all the shit she’s
getting. If you say no,you’re kidding yourself. Movin on!
Ok,now we get to talk about my favorite O-President Obama. Now I know some of you
out there think he’s “grandstanding “and not doing enough to “stimulate” our
pocketbooks. But, in reality, he is trying to make us more self sufficient i.e. being
more “Socialist” in his approach to our country’s issues. If you look at the textbook
definition of the word socialism, it refers to a broad set of economic theories of social
organization advocating public or state ownership and administration of the means of
production and distribution of goods, and a society characterized by equality for all
individuals, with a fair or egalitarian method of compensation. Hmmm, that’s sounds
like he’s thinking “outside the box” to help us get this country back on our feet.
Trust me, he’s doing more to help us in California than the guy up in Sacramento, who
is living up to his name and “terminating” the state’s economy. As Dr. Phil would
say “How’s that workin’ for ya?”Answer..it’s not. But I digress
Speaking of terminating, that would be a perfect way to deal with the final “o” in
my diatribe, Bill O’ Reilly, who seems to look for any and all ways to pick on the hip
hop community. His latest call to action surrounds Eminem’s latest single “We Made You,”
which the rapper ,in the tradition of many past projects, pokes fun at pop culture
and celebrities including Bret Michaels, Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian, Britney
Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Amy Winehouse, and Sarah Palin. Now, I will let you take a
guess at who he took issue with Em when it came to lyrical content. You got it,
good ole “Hockey Mom” Sarah Palin.

I got to be honest, there are hundereds of great single moms out there who, just because
they were not a “Vice Presidential” candidiate, get no accolades. I know a few of them,
and she’s not exactly a fabulous mom if her own daughter’s having a child “out of
wedlock” at only 17! Guess you forgot about that, huh Bill? Guess that slipped your mind
when going on your latest tirade. And why weren’t you as passionate about defending the
other woman mentioned in the song? You know for a guy who cannot stand the art form known
as hip hop, he sure does listen to alot of it. Maybe it’s just me. Late
Reveiw of the Movie “The Wrestler”
January 14, 2009
“In this life you can lose everything you love, everything that loves you. A lot of people told me that I’d never wrestle again, the only one that’s gonna tell me when I’m through doing my thing, is you people here.”
Prophetic words, words to live by, maybe even dying words. Certainly not words most would associate with the wild and crazy world that is professional wrestling. But, then again, professional wrestling has always been met with indifference, even an underlying chuckle as to the validity and legitimacy of it as a viable form of entertainment. But no more. Veteran actor Mickey Rourke portrayed Randy” The Ram” Robinson in the new movie “The Wrestler”, a movie released in limited theaters in December 2008.The movie is the third such movie of the same name (the other two made in 1925 and 1974 respectively). It is a drama centered on retired professional wrestler (aforementioned) as he makes his way through the independent circuit, trying to get back in the game for one final showdown with his former rival.
But to say this was just a movie about wrestling sells this way short. It is so much more. It is about what a man does to his body, what a man has done to fracture personal relationships within his own life. A man, holding on for dear life to all he knows. This movie takes no shorts in its depiction of what goes on in a real wrestling locker room. As someone who has been around many different wrestlers and promoters with a myriad of experience on and off for nearly eight years, it is the type of movie that is not all glitz and glamour as depicted on weekly basis by World Wrestling Entertainment(WWE) and Total Nonstop Action(TNA)programming. It is the true pulse, the true grass roots of what the business is at its core. This film probably exposes a lot of subject matter many workers (the term used for wrestlers in the business) would rather the general public not be exposed to or know about. But that is where the true beauty of this film lies
Many have said for years that wrestling is fake and that they are all just glorified stuntmen. But these men and women that travel up and down the small cities and towns are so much more. They have their own problems, their own vices, their own shortcomings. Yet they love what they do and do it for all of us for sometimes miniscule if any big payday. The pain that Rourkes’ character “The Ram” exudes is not forced, not staged. You feel his hopelessness of never having a decent relationship with his estranged daughter or a meaningful relationship with any woman, even a local stripper named Cassidy(played magnificently by Oscar winner Marisa Tomei) who resists his advances due to her inner conflict with self and job. Ultimately, you feel sorrow for him as he cannot pull himself to walk away from something that has been his life, despite suffering a debilitating heart attack
In the end though, you will be the judge. This is not David Arquette acting like a jackass and Scott Caan being silly for a few laughs at wrestling’s expense. This is a story, a story that is long overdue in its telling. The story may be about a fictional character, but it is based in reality. There is countless Randy” The Ram ‘Robinson’s in independent wrestling today. You just never hear about them. Now you will. This is a must see for fans and non fans alike. This is their story
