Nigger

November 18, 2008

“Fuck you Nigger! Fuck Youuuuuuu! You fuckin Nigger!” These words are still vivid in my memory and I can still hear them in my head as if it just happened. Your probably wondering what exactly am I talking bout well let me tell you. I recently just spent a stint of two months in Sibiu Romania (Europe) playing professional basketball for the CSU Sibiu club.

Believe it or not these words were shouted at me from a car with four men in it. During my time in the city we practiced once in the morning and once in the evening, following our evening practice I always went to eat dinner and then I would walk home to my apartment from the restaurant. The walk took about 20 to 25 minutes and the longest part of it was a straight-away that was dimly lit. On the evening of the incident as I was walking along this long strip, a car approached and stopped and stared, I didn’t think nothing of it so I kept walking. I finally then approached the end of the long strip to cross the street and so I could finally go into my apartment building when I noticed that same car that stopped and watched me was waiting at the end of the street. Before I can even start to cross the street the car drove up to me and the passenger rolled down his window enough for him to peek his head out and that is when it all happened……. “FUCK YOU NIGGER! FUCK YOUUUUUU! YOU FUCKIN NIGGER!” I could not believe what I was hearing. Out of anger I said to the men in the vehicle “Get out of the car and call me a nigger so I can whip yo ass!” but that never happened, his friends joined in for a second and they eventually drove off down the street in the opposite direction. Cowards!

So many emotions went through me as I walked up the stairs to finally enter my apartment. I was angry, hurt, furious, etc. I understand that I was in a different country but why on earth would a human being for no good reason say that to another person. This only told me that despite what a lot of people claim, racism still exist. Yeah I know I was in Sibiu Romania but it still hit home hard with me. This made me think of the things my ancestors had to go through (from the slavery years all the way to segregation in the south). What happened to me was minor compared to the challenges they faced during those years. They were not only called the word “nigger” but they had to deal with being physically attacked among other things.

Unfortunately this was one of a few instances where that word was said to me or around me by one of the locals in Sibiu, that was just the more dramatic/hateful of them all. I observed that certain people in the town think it is ok to call black people “niggers”, they feel this way because of what they are exposed to.

They listen to our music and follow our television, movies, ect as well.

So they hear the word(nigga) being used amongst ourselves so they feel that it is ok to say it. See there is a small population that does not know the capacity of the word and on the other side of things, there is a majority that understand it but unfortunately they will call a black person a nigger with hatred in their hearts. I myself use the word “nigga” too often when talking to my fellow people. I use it as an expression almost as if I am saying brutha or sistah. But after this incident occurred it made me reevaluate the word, maybe I should not use the word. Even better maybe black people as a whole should do away with referring to each other as “niggas” no matter what context we are using it in. We should take the word out of our music, television, movies, etc.

Doing this will make a statement and take away other races comfort level of using the word whither using it in a racial way or saying it trying to fit in with us. I myself cannot promise that the word will not come out my mouth but I will make a conscious effort to stop using the word so eventually it leaves my vocabulary. I challenge all those who use the word to do the same and lets see the difference it makes.

IM BACK! | Chad Bell aka LouAlcindor

November 16, 2008

Well after two months your boy CB is back in the building. As you all know I was in Sibiu Romania playing basketball. You may be asking why am I back so early well lets just say the situation out there was not for me at all, so that is why I returned back to the States. And lets just say I am proud to be an American. So many changes have happened since I left, wow we actually have a black president. Congratulations to Barack Obama. I am mad that I missed out the opportunity of witnessing history here in person. From what I was told the atmosphere was phenomenal. It is always good to see black people and our entire country as well come together as a whole.

But back to my experience playing ball over in Romania. Personally I feel that it was an overall horrible experience. The team I played for was a very unprofessional organization with zero class about themselves. The coach and the owner did not even get along, it seems as if they actually damn near hated each other so that was a red flag in it self. Upon arriving in the town I wanted to turn around as fast as I came in. I was picked up from the airport and taken to my hotel, only problem was it was more of a Figueroa (see South Central Los Angeles) motel prairie shack.

This place was terrible, I actually thought they were playing some type of joke on me but when the team official who help me with my bags to my room dropped my bags and left I figured out that this was no joke. To give you a little insight on what the room looked like, just picture a slightly bigger ragedy ass dorm room. Not your nice dorm room, it was the room in the building of the worse dorm on campus type of room. You know the dorms they move the people in who registered for classes and housing like the day classes started. Ummm yeah it was that bad. But I have not given you all the best part of this terrible ass room. They had me sleeping on this hard ass bed that felt like it was cement with a thin ass cushion mat on it. And it was nothing more than two twin beds pushed together, mind you I am 7 feet tall so pretty much my feet were hanging over the bed inches a way from the floor. So it was not like I was laying down more like sitting down. Lol. And my bathroom was literally 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 like seriously. My shower was just an area you stepped up to with a shower handle and not a curtain in sight. And the water did not get hot, it was luke warm at best so alot of times I took cold showers in a room with no heat. So yeah it was terrible living. Mind you I was suppose to stay in this room for three days before I moved into my apartment. And you guessed it, that did not happen I was in the room with no heat and no hot water for two weeks. So I finally moved into my apartment and come to find out their was somebody already living in the apartment, yes you guessed it right it had some creepy crawlers roaming around there.

Straight roaches! Just when I finally had got some type of comfort I gotta deal wit big ass roaches. So you know I had to pull that Inglewood side out and bang on the owner of the apartment for having me move in and he knew he had them damn roaches in there before I got there. So I told him to fix the problem or else I am out, I don’t care about a lease. So that was my living situation but as far as the basketball part it was another story in it self. It was not what I expected it to be. I thought things would be more organized. I thought practice would be more structured and also the individual development would me more advanced. I had better coaching when I first started playing organized basketball when I was 11 years old, it was that terrible. We did the exact same thing everyday in practice in the exact same order. We started practice with three man weave, 3 on 2- 2 on 1 drill, 11 man break, and then we have the worse scrimmages in basketball till the end of the practice. I felt like I was caught in the matrix. As for the games things started off well for me, my first game I had 12 points and 8 rebounds in 21 minutes. When we played one of the top teams from Turkey (Bandbit) in the euro challenge I had 8 points and 8 rebounds in 18 minutes. But in other games my coach will barely play me leaving in his starters the whole game. This raised a red flag with me because I did not fly across the globe to sit on nobodies bench, I came to start and put up numbers. After several talks with the coach I saw that things were not gone ever change because he had his favorites on the team that were established before I even stepped foot on the plane to go out there. So at this point in my career I had to do what was best for me and come back home to the states. I plan to just train until I decide whither I am going back overseas or try the D League again. So this is why I am back so early. Did ya miss me?(Varnell Hill voice for the Martin fans). To all my peeps in twitter land and those who follow me here I missed yall dearly, but do not worry I am going to pick up where we left off.

Im baaaaaaaaaaack!

ps:check out my action pics
