2009 BET Awards Review

June 29, 2009 · Print This Article

betjamie1Wow what an opening to the 2009 BET Awards with New Edition(Bobby Brown included) rendition of “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 staring Michael Jackson. It was only right a legendary group such as New Edition do a tribute to the Jackson 5 in memory of Michael Jackson. Awards show host Jammie Foxx came out in a great fashion with a rendition of his own of MJ’s “Beat It”. Foxx wore a red leather jacket with all zippers and bells with the glitter glove as well. With Foxx hosting the show it all worked out by design, if anybody can impersonate Mike its is definitely Jamie. Foxx reminded us all why we should take this time and celebrate the life of Michael Jackson.

The first award of he night went to Lebron James  who won Best male athlete, Best Male Hip hop went to Lil Wayne.  With the first performance of the night Kerri Hilson opened up with her hit single “Turnin Me Out” and progressed into “Knock Me Down” which is her latest hit single. Hilson brought an incredible stage presents with a rock pop chick look, definitely in honor of the King of Pop. Following Kerri’s performance Neyo followed up with “Lady of My Life” in tribute to MJ.  Jammie Foxx and T Pain teamed together to perform their smash hit “Blame It”. It wouldn’t be a party if Uncle Snoop didn’t drop in and please believe he did just that adding excitement to the performance. Pain came draped with his platinum diamond chain titled “Big Ass Chain”(complete nergoism).

betjamieneyo

The Best Male R&B award was won by Neyo. Beyonce blessed the audience with a heartfelt performance with a beautiful stage set decked out with angel wings, the performance brought out a ton of emotion in memory of MJ. Gospel group Mary Mary gave the audience a special treat and a little bit of Jesus by performing “God In Me”. The audience was blessed with a special surprise feature on the song with Queen Latifah making a special appearance. Taraja P. Henson left the night with the best actress award and best female artist went to Kerri Hilson. Jamie Foxx along with Neyo performed “Her Own”, Neyo dressed appropriate with a MJ’ish leather white jacket to go along with red gloves. Jamie Foxx complemented his jacket with a black leather jacket of his own complete with the rhinestones, also featuring in the performance was the rapper Fabolous.

betbelbivdevoe

Neyo gave viewers a special treat when he brought out some of his favorite artist which included Keith Sweat who performed a few of his hit classics, the legendary 90′s group Guy, and Bel Biv DeVoe also performed their hit smashes. Ciara performed “A Better Place” in honor of MJ, unfortunately it was terrible song selection. Keyshia came with a solid performance and a pink aura, r&b singer Monica also featured in the performance. These two talented singers make a great combination on mic, they definitely should reward fans with more projects together. The best female r&b artist went to Beyonce. Jay Z performed his new hit drop “Death of Autotune”, this brought a serious hiphop element to the show. The significance of this performance can bring music artist who use Autotune to their knees.

betaliciakeys

What an appearance by Don Cornelius, the original host of Soul Train struggled over his words. May God Bless him, cocaine is a hell of a drug. Just say no kids. Mr. Cornelius never the less introduced Tevin Campbell, Tyrese, John Gill, and Trey Songs who did a huge tribute to the Ojays who received the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. Listening to these young brothers to a rendition of “Stair Way to Heaven” nearly brought tears to the eye. Eddie Levert of the group did turn my tears into laughter when he slipped and used an explicit word when describing old times with Michael Jackson. A special highlight of the night came when Alicia Keys was presented with the Humanitarian Lifetime Achievement award. Keys has done alot of work to help and improve life for families in need located in Africa. Wyclef received the male Lifetime Achievement award for his work in his homeland of Haiti. These two artist are extraordinary talents and regular people as well. It is good to hear artist of their status giving back to the people.

Overall the 2009 BET Awards show was a well run production. It has definitely improved as far as the quality. I am very pleased and proud to say African Americans as well as others were represented well. Special prayers goes out to the Jackson family. Michael Jackson may you Rest In Peace. You will forever be loved and your legacy will live on.

All I can say is there werent many good performances. I thawt the MJ tribute wouldve been better. And when NEw Edition sang MJ’s songs an octave lower it killed the whole purpose of singing MJ’s song in da 1st damn place. I loved Jamie Foxx,Travis Barker, and T-Pain’s performance. and SNOOP didnt even perform, all dey did was mix his beat in there while he did Crip poses lol. Worst performance, Drake and Lil Wayne, and SOulja Boy.

P.S: Chris Brown was supposed 2 perform but was pulled at the last minute. His tribute wouldve been HELLA hot. Search for pics, they got em. and from the looks of the pics he was gonna do Thriller as 1 of ‘em. BET f*cked up when they did that…..smh.

I don’t know what awards show the person who wrote this review was watching, it surely wasnt the spectacle that I watched last night. This so called “tribute” was a disgrace to Michael Jackson and his entire family. It was embarrasing. As a black person, I am sick and tire of these so called artist displaying ignorant and ghetto behavior on national tv. We have a black president for godsake, act accordingly. Shameful. I guess the reviewer thinks and behaves like these people, so it is normal to them.

You must either have slept through the show or been drinking. How can you say that was a well run production. Camera misses, Jamie not knowing when to start or where to stand…. overall the wrost put together show I have ever seen. And Beyonce, OMG you must be joing… she will forever be embarrassed by that performance. Very few great moments, and an award show should be filled with great moments, and as a tribute to MJ, what a complete let down…

This person must work for BET. The show may have come a long way as far as production goes, but content will ruin anything. With Obama as president you would think we would portray ourseleves with more respect, and dignity than what BET gave us last night. While there were a few good performances, the tributes were for the most part a hot mess, just goes to prove music has traveled so far in the wrong direction from where it started. This was an embarrassing stereotype laced production, and the line up for the fall — I can not even go there right now. It is a mockery to say that last nights show was to pay tribute to a man that opened countless doors, broke down thick barriers and made classic music.

Ok first of all this is my opinion . Does BET get an excuse because of short notices to those who think the show was horrible…NO. Why because even though the BET awards has only been airing for 9 years, the people backstage haven’t been in the industry for only 9 years so…NO. Now do ‘I’ think it was a good show overall WITH the “trying” addition of a MJ tribute…NO. Do I think it was a good show for the short amount of time to re-do a whole show…YES. Now…I think they should have done basically an extended lifetime achievement video like the OJays, gave an award and invited the whole Jackson family to except it on behalf of MJ, and got all the rights and everything straight before hand, right after his death, to do a tribute show in late Aug., Sept., or early Oct. I feel…better yet I know that people and us ‘black’ people would’ve have understood why BET couldn’t have done an elaborate tribute at the awards show because of time constraints. Instead of ‘slapping’ something together at the last minute and it not be “GREAT”, people would have understood and respected the more elaborated achievement video and award. As black people I felt that BET thought “THIS IS MIKE! HE WAS BLACK! WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING “FIRST” BEFORE MTV OR VH-1, OR ANOTHER NETWORK!” and basically it backfired. I feel that the pride of black people and BET wanting so bad to be the “FIRST” network to do something for MJ backfired. If you think someone like MJ should deserve an over the top tribute and he should, like a 3-5 hour long special! Why would you jeopardize a GREAT tribute if you “WERE NOT” trying to brag and boast about being the first by rushing it. Now another tribute HAS TO, AND WILL be redone. For the sake of BET and a “BLACK NETWORK” I hope BET does it, because if they don’t all of that extra work will go down the drain…a complete failure…Why? Because the next tribute for MJ will be “PLANNED” and you better believe it will be “GREAT!”

Lastly, If you “BET” had the manpower, skills, and talent, to rewrite a show for the circumstances together in less than a week. Stop and think how fast you all could’ve did what I mentioned above, brought the rights to his music, make a theatrical commercial for the “PLANNED” tribute to be shown at the BET awards, and get a proper tribute together in the next 3 months!!! (And even maybe with the help of MTV, VH-1, or whoever), but…no we as Black people couldn’t put the pride to the side.

And one more thing don’t bash the other acts REMEMBER this was the BET AWARDS 09 SHOW FIRST! NOT A MJ TRIBUTE FIRST, people need to understand that before bashing all of the other performances not dealing with MJ.

I do not watch BET because it does not represent the core values I have established for my family. After watching the show I was embarrassed… Are you kidding me! We have strayed as a people when we support the GARBAGE, I witnessed last night. I will not even begin to critique the content or the quality of the music that is being pushed on our generation of young people. I will say this… Lil Wayne (weazel) is a disgrace to our race… We are better than what was displayed last night on the BET awards. I feel for the Jackson family it was a not a tribute but a testament of how much seperation there is from the quality of music the Michael Jackson gave to the world. Michael, we will miss you and the void that you have left may never be filled. R.I.P

This was a crappy show full of denigrating and subpar performances letting us know how low our standards have sunk in terms with music. This exemplary showcase of impropriety and lack of decorum, should have been put on hold for this “tribute”. The truth is that Debra Lee and her array of incompetent employees thought this was a great way to generate ratings for the show. Thus labeling it the official tribute to Michael Jackson. The only thing that ameliorates the anger among music fans for the opprobrium we witnessed yesterday, is that it shows us how deep music has plummetted over the past few decades. Michael Jackson had a variety of topics to sing about without imposing cuss words througout. He actually had albums that had more than one hit on it. He sang about political and social consciousness, environmental consciousness and racial issues. He promoted philanthropy and embodied his concern for humanity. There wasd discipline in his work, perfection and artistry-not to mention uncontested talent. He gave music a civic purpose rather than to use it as a tool for cultivating money no matter the cost. Debra Lee and the board of directors of BET are shamlessly parading black people and exploiting us for monetary gain. This particular decision is seditious and should prompt us to take the “black” out of BET. It doesn’t represent black people, culture or give us the gamuth of black entertainers. BET, shame on you.

I thought that it was okay. The camera shots were horrible and it pissed me off cuz everybody was cussin and they were trying to block it out and ended up blocking out every word but the cuss word. Keri Hilson….the performance was good but the singing sucked and w.i.t.h(wat in the hell) was that at the end????? i laffed out loud wen Taraji and Tyrese were pretending to be Jodi and Yvette i thought that was funny and when that man was talking for like 20 minutes and nobody knew what he was talking about omg i got up and used the bathroom, ate some cookies and his behind still wansn’t finished!!! Beyonce i am like her biggest fan ever but she likes the truth so Bey im being totally honest i was very dissapointed cuz we all wanted her to perform single ladies, diva, or ego. or maybe even halo. not ave maria that didn’t go with the BET Awards theme to me. Young Money, lil wayne and drake i thought they were pretty bad and it pissed me off cuz they was editing everything for nothing. keyshia and monica were good ke ke palmer was good ciara was good Neyo killed it jamie was good jay was good. but i must say it was better than last years awards just they did a horrible job with the production with the camera shots and editing also Alicia keys speech was good too love her also!

I don’t know wtf you saw but I can’t say I’m surprised, after all its BET. This is the only BET awards show I remember watching besides the first one, which I only remember because it was the first one.

Nobody ever taught any of these dumb asses if you gonna do it big, don’t do it half-assed. No lil wayne and soulija boy.

With the world watching you got drunk ass Ving Rhames talkinbout BET is guns, Mike Jack is guns… Really?

Dudes rapping/singing bout how they wanna f^ck every girl in the world with little girls dancing around them like that sh1t is cute… This was not the stage to try to act make pedo sh1t is cool.

High ass Bobby Brown waging his tounge while doin ABC??? Really.

That was just ten minutes of the sh1tfest…. No Eddie Levert…

We have a world stage and posthumoulsly honor one of, if not the greatest Black musical talents ever and you got 75% of your entertainment cooning like first prize was the last piece of popeyes in the world…

I used to think it disgusting that the kids today thought this sh1t was cool but now I see why they do and its b/c most adults are cosigning this sh1t while they selling out their kids..

This show got me tight, rambling like Don Cornelius but the point is BET failed last night and so did mainstream Black culture…

EVEN THE CELEBS BEEN TWITTERING ABOUT HOW BAD IT WAS. LIL WAYNE, DRAKE, YOUNG MONEY SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED NO WHERE ELSE. THAT SHOW WAS EMBARRASSING TO ALL BLACK PEOPLE. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS BLOG OR WHATEVER GAVE IT A POSITIVE REVIEW. I ADMIT THE AWARDS SHOW IS ALWAYS A MESS. BUT TO DEDICATE IT TO MJ AND STILL COME OUT WITH A MESS MADE IT WORSE. BET IS NOT UP THERE IN PRODUCTION OR CLASS TO BE TALKING ABOUT A MJ TRIBUTE.

This was the worst show ever,Keisha and Monica was the best and the Ojays,I love Beyonce her performance was not what you expect from her they needed a stripper pole ,why they always try to make this beautiful person look and dance like a stripper I don’t understand. Jazzi people don’t really care about him he thinks he decides what music should be wrong. They needed great singers and dancers like Chris Brown and Usher that could do Thriller and really moonwalk . Chris Brown is the best thing out there at the moment when it comes to MJ. Maybe MTV will do a lot better.

I believe BET did the best they could with that short amount of time that they had. Please file a complaint with the FCC regarding the inappropriate nature of this award show. There was obscenity, vulgarity and we were all misguided thinking this was an actual tribute.
Also check out this campaign, apparently they were successful in the past in forcing BET to change the name of a show that was formerly called “Hot Ghetto Mess”????!!!!
    http://www.enoughisenoughcampaign.com/

We need to get advertisers involved in this because money is what talks and honestly BET used Michael Jackson’s name to get higher ratings. The succeeded getting the highest ratings since their inception. We can’t let this injustice go on.

The 2009 BET awards was literally a shit show! It was offensive, degrating, and rediculously ignorant. The tributes to Michael Jackson were nice, but at the same time people really got up there and showed their asses. The show was unorganized, which I could kind of understand, but people were up there cussin and actin a fool on live television. Michael Jackson was an entertainer, who shared his music with the world. He never got up on stage and cussed or offended anybody. The only people I applaude are Alicia Keys, Wyclef, and Neyo for acting like they had some class up there on stage, while still representing both themselves and MJ. I also heard reports that they cancelled Chris Brown’s performance at the very last minute, becuase of bad publicity. How unprofessional is that? So what if he caught a bad rap so did Michael Jackson, but we still honor his legacy for the musical genious and icon that he was. I tell you one thing, Chris Brown would have done a hellava lot better than half of those people up their. This goes to show you how BET is nothing more than a mere minstrel organization that credits low-talent so-called entertainers. I am personally disgusted with BET.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? I didn’t even know that the New Edition was singing a MJ song in the opening. Then I recognized Bobby Brown. What was he trying to do with his tongue, imitate Gene Simmons from KISS? All the songs about f—ing women, were horrendous. I’ve seen these performers before, but this was no tribute. I told my mom to watch as it was going to be a tribute to MJ. All it was…was a bunch of jerks acting like fools. I admit some things were ok. I quit watching it, recording it to see it later. Thank God, I fast forwarded through most of it. Janet Jackson looked so grief stricken though, her words make me cry. I’ll never watch BET again. And as for Jamie Fox, I loved him, but after seeing him on the show, I will never look at him the same again.

Now to the juice……..Beyonce Beyonce Beyonce ………I heard from Kendra Smith one of the produces of BET that they pulled you up to do a song in memory of MJ and at the last min you change your set to Ava Marie which went against the the whole theme that was a World music,Grammy,Kenndy center proformance! Does this reviewer work for BET???? Fox gotta get over himself and having three performances was too self indulging. I’m sure the BET brass couldn’t stop him either. Most performance were substandard. They should have done a regular award show with a nice focused MJ piece for the tribute, rather than this washy attempt. Simply the worst Bet award show yet.

I ABSOLUTELY disagree with Ashley… No one asked BET to do a tribute, especially at the last minute… They announced it’s be “tribute” JUST to get ratings & profit! BET’S RATINGS WERE AT ALL TIME HIGH (go check) because THE WORLD TUNED IN when it claimed that it would be “HISTORIC” tribute!!!!!! It was HISTORICALLY GHETTO!!!!!

It wasn’t fit for an exceptional humanitarian & GREATEST ARTIST OF ALL TIME….. Anyone who thinks BET did a fine job need to go read on MJ’s life, accomplishments & what he means to world!!! The man was listed in Guinness World Record book in 2000 for contributing charities THE MOST, which is why he went broke….. He outsold Elvis. BET not only did a terrible job but also insulted MJ’s memory, Janet JAckson & MJ family and world fans…..

I watched the awards from beginning to end and i agree the show was a HOT ASS MESS!! I see y the Boondocks took a stab @ Debra Lee(bets ceo)and the entire BET Network. The show was definetly unorganized and the audio was fucked up on most performances. I was very upset that Chris Brown couldn”t perform due to the likes of JAY-Z. Beyonce’s performance was wack and they played Keri Hilson by giving her a bad mic. I think it would’ve been alot better if BET had a simple moment of Silence in honor of MJ or a quick video mix tribute would’ve been nice. Then later they could’ve done a more elborate memorial. They should of thought b4 revamping the entire show. I hope it’s better next year MS. Debra Lee

Yall wanted me yall got me. I wrote this review. So now what! I wrote this review while watching the show so i type what I saw down. I kept in mind that the bet folks didnt have any type of time to put the tribute together. and also how do you expect them to control grown people? all those artist is grown people you cant control them acting a fuckin fool on television. and also i didnt focus on the ignorant part of the shows i focused on the good. just like michael jackson would have did you idiots! mike only wanted to see the good in people he ignored the bad. i guess you guys forgot that. you all know lil wayne and his performance was gone be a spectical. he is an ignorant ass druggie rap artist but im sure all of you support his music and have all his mix tapes and all that which is why he has been successful. you support his garbage so dont go try to throw your favorite rapper under the bus now. you know lil wayne very well when your listening to your ipod so dnt disown him when michael jackson has passed and a tribute is attempted. do like me and disown him from the jump. so im sure you are going to support him and his syrup pill poppin music. the show yes was not the best but like i said i did what michael would have done and focused on the effort and the good in people. like the alicia keyes and wyclef humantarian award and maxwells performance. i enjoyed the beautiful parts of the show.
