The Black Experience | Will Obama really change how African American’s are precieved by the world?

December 11, 2008 · Print This Article

I dont have to explain to you what the “Black Experience” is. You already know. You’ve watched Roots, Goodtimes, The Jefferson’s, and The Cosby Show. Im sure you have watched, Flavor of Love, and its many spin-offs, and probably have Keyshia Cole’s reality series on DVR as we speak. Sad to say all of the above are, and have been considered depictions of the black expierence.

Roots, made the attempt at accurately depicting slavery, while movies like Amistad describe the travels of those same slaves. Goodtimes, showed family and struggle, where as The Jefferson’s was our first chance to move out of the slums. The Cosby Show, a professional family, rooted in love. The Black Experience.

Have we lost our minds??? Seems to me that we have some how went down hill from those moments of accomplishment. Im going to say this, and i might be critisized for it, but to me, African American’s in today’s media is are nothing but a camera crew and a bunch of blacks acting like coons. (I told you, you would hate me for my comments). A black man, calling another black person a coon. No, i didnt say they were coon’s, just acting like coons, slight difference, not much, but different never-the-less.

So what can Obama do for Us/Them? I’ve heard alot, around the water cooler, that Obama will change how we are looked at. Not saying that YOU feel that way, but i have heard it. Im not fighting it, but someone’s ‘gonna’ have to show me how. And thats where you come in! Leave me a comment. Thanks

I hope African American’s come to there senses and realize, what they do in front of a camera represent not just one person but African Americans as a undivided whole. (To the world)

example – The worst is mad Tv

    1 go to youtube.com
    2 search
    3 enter mad tv
    The African Americans Fake Thugs
    Those guys are sell outs

Obama is a idol. People are going to change .. We as African American need not let the Media, nor any other NON factual deterrent Change that..

Personally Fresh, I believe that Barack Obama has done something “we” were told could not and would not be done. Our grandparents, parents, our generation, and now the next generation (such as my angel KDeezy) are witnessing and are a part of this particular piece of history! That alone is an accomplishment that is going to be in the history books forever! Second, here is a BLACK MAN that is not only the first BLACK president, but he is a man that appears to put God first, his family second, and he wants to make a difference. I pray and believe there will be multitudes of black men that take the initiative to step up to the plate. There are black men in the world that are handling their business, I’m not taking that away from them, but the fact remains there are not enough doing so! In addition to Barack being an inspiration, Mrs. Obama (along with my Gram, my mom, and other black women that represent the matriarch of the black family) is the epitome of a woman, wife, and mother…but that is another article so as soon as TCJ places an article on here about Michelle, I will continue my comment. Until next time, God bless!

No matter who is President, there is one thing for certain. Money rules the world. Period. Point blank. The highest rated show ever in the history of Bravo was the Real Housewives of Atlanta. And while his show highlighted women with stacks on deck (supposedly), it also depicted BW calling one another bitches and catfighting and whatnot. Shows such as this will continue to being in the mainstay on TV because they are highly rated and therefore will sell more ad space. (more money, more problems)

The only way to stop this type of media is for us to simply not watch it. But unfortunately, shows such as Housewives and the like will continue to flourish and define our community because we watch. I say turn off the TV and read a good book.

Obama will not change the media per se in terms of television entertainment. But hopfully it will make us, the audience, more aware of more important issues so that WE as a people can bring about more positive programming.

I will have to agree with the top comment, we have to be shown in a better light. People all over the world only view us as thugs or gangstas because thats all we are popular for. I want to have a cool stereo type like “you have to be smart, your asian” thats a cool as stereo type right there
