Review: DJ Quik and Kurupt – BlaQKout
June 19, 2009 · Print This Article
“They been hating on Quik,” I over heard someone say the other day, and i feel no different. They have been. Quik has been a genius on the low for years, and i say on the low only becuase most listeners dont give him to chance. To one person (on the East Coast) he was “Just the guy with the perm,” but to another Brooklynite his early albums were acknowledged as classic via twitter. As for us on the West Coast we give Quik his credit, but not our support, or our money for that matter. He has evaded the success that should accompany great music. As for Kurupt, he has struggled with solo efforts, while his greatest testament (along with his DPG partner Daz) is his work on Dogg Food, in which kurupt is 1/2 of the Death Row duo Tha Dogg Pound.
On this offering, both underrated artists bring the music to the people. The people hopefully will listen. BlaQKout show’s Quik’s diversity production wise, going from tracks like “9x’s outta 10″ where the canvas is all hard hitting drums, to the smooth almost inspirational “The Appeal” (which is my second favorite on the album), where Quik quips at the beginning of the track
“Everybody was born with a brain, but wasnt nobody born with instructions to use it.”
Quiksta jumps out the booth on the title track, explaining more of whats been going on in his mind with:
“And even though i dont win no grammy’s// i still get love in the streets, from the pappies and mammies// i’ll be damned, they aint family// they treat me like i flunked out of grambling// but they happy that i went on a scholarship Got’ damn me… i know you love me if you feel this// im not a rapper im a realist….”
I think those moments make for a real expierence that we can all relate to. Kurupt as we all know, packs a punch lyrically, and has returned to the Kurupt we remember from “the night I [kurupt] served 2000 emcee’s.” One of the best moments on this album is ”Do You Know,” where the production shines and the flow and cadence of both artists fits in the pocket perfectly with the track. Something you can listen to as you let your cares float away, the epitome of West Coast summertime music. This is real music, either support it or wave goodbye…
