A Cold Piece

A cold piece of work. Simply defined, someone who is honestly blunt, who carries a bit of confidence behind their words. For Tiare Gomes, a young lady from a little town in Hawaii, that’s more than just words, it’s a way of life whether she’s cruising down Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood or making heads turn or things happen on the Vegas strip.

When looking at her work, it is easy to see how her subjects feel free to express themselves and “make love” to the camera. But it didn’t just happen overnight. It is a passion that she has had since an early age. Well, I am from Hilo, Hawaii. Tiny and beautiful town. I have always had an interest in photography, my first cameras were disposables. I love being able to capture the world the way that I see it. Explains Tiare. When citing what she feels makes a great photographer, she exclaims “There are different elements that make one a good photographer. One being able to grasp the technical aspects of it. Lighting, exposure, all key elements, the second and most important in my book eyes is talent. A photographer is an artist in her own right, she creates fantasy from reality, she has the power and ability to capture parts of you that you did not know showed; she can bring what’s inside, out. While she admits to not mastering all aspects, she feels confident that her work thus far has shown that her ability has   “no bounds and I have no limits.”

But for it to be a labor of love, inspiration must come from somewhere.” ** My inspiration comes with each photo shoot that I do, comments Tiare, adding” every time I wrap and see the fruit of my labor, it makes me so happy that I want to be able to do this and only this. The moment that this becomes possible, I know I have arrived.

Yet even still, something or someone has to notice the gift and be able to or willing, to take a chance. That person was Benoni Tagoe, CEO of The Franchise enterprises and, friend of Gomes, who took notice that she has a good eye for photography. “He asked me for weeks to do a photo shoot for him of new artist of his; I did not have the camera, the lights, or anything. But, as Tiare remarks, “He finally convinced me to do it, no experience with his camera, which I had never held in my life. The results were life changing. “.That opportunity led to others particularly when she started working with Deven Chase of the DMH group. “He really set me on fire, going so far as to promote me at his clubs and shows, hired me for personal parties and events and made sure my work got seen in Vegas. ”

Now with that base to build from, the wheels began in full throttle and a company, Cold Piece Photography, was spawned. Asked the significance of the name, she clearly states,” That is what my friends and colleagues call me, “cold piece”. Apparently I got that name because I am “cold piece of work”. I think it reflects my work because I’m cold with mine. I work until I have perfection. “And it seems to be working as her portfolio is ever expanding.” So far, I have been lucky enough to have my subjects choose me. I love to photograph people in motion, other artists, dancers, singers, etc. It is art creating art.”While not trying to single one shoot out from another as a favorite, she did say that” Carlos “Spanky” Hayes (MTV’s Wylin’Out” is always a favorite to shoot. It’s a nonstop party when he is on set. Laughs and jokes and expressions. See what I mean about art begetting art?

Still, she is just getting started. Clearly she is grounded, but ready for the new horizons in the future. When pressed for an ideal spot for a photo shoot, she says,” I’d love to shoot anywhere in the big city i.e.  New York, but further remarks,” I’m still trying to get there. when all is said and done though, she lives up to her moniker and has no qualms about what the future holds as she aspires to head into the New Year” getting bigger, better, stronger.. Working hard to perfect my craft. Now that’s a “cold piece of work”. Late
