Monetizing Hope: Obama T-Shirts
December 5, 2008 · Print This Article
Had a discussion tonight with some folks about the monetizing of hope, specifically obama t-shirts and briefly Pastors charging a minimum to preach abroad. This is a touchy subject apparently, as we all had different views on the topic of Obama T-Shirts. Out of the 5 of us discussing the matter, two said “go for it,” one (myself) said “you have to draw the line somewhere,” and lastly, CB played the devil’s advocate and understood the perspectives of both sides.
In any urban area, you can find your local hustler selling “mama we made it” T-shirts, or search “Obama T-shirts” you’ll find 13,700,000 results according Google.com. Dare i say it, black people will take ANYTHING and make money off it. If its hot, someone got it!
My feeling on the matter, somethings should remain sacred, and the monetizing of hope should be considered off limits. Hope is free, and should remain that way. My issue is not with simply Obama tees, but what Obama represents to mainstream America is hope. And to take hope, and put it on a t-shirt and wear it, to me, cheapens the idea of hoping for a better tomorrow. Almost like inflation of the US dollar.
Well what the other three were saying was that, even while selling hope, those peddling t-shirts with slogans, key phrases from speeches, and the face of Obama are exercising their hope, hope to pay the rent, and hope, they don’t get evicted. What you think? (Thanks Flow)
