Guest Blog | “fear of failure or the fear of succeeding” by Mikey McFly

Over 50 years ago, Langston Hughes wrote a poem entitled “A Dream Deferred” which questioned what could happen to an idea or “dream” if it isn’t utilized correctly. As children we are asked the age old question, “What do we want to be when we grow up?” I remember hearing things like Fireman, Policeman, Doctor, Lawyer, Rapper, Tennis Player and other highly regarded occupations. As the years progressed, the future lawyers and doctors took paths that not only slighted their dreams, it affected their hearts as well. We often look at luminaries such as Jay-Z, Russell Simmons, Oprah Winfrey and the newly elected President Barack Obama as inspirations for success but when it the opportunity arises for us to become great (which occurs more often than we liked to admit) we often ignore it until time becomes as cruel as the coldest December wind. We underestimate ourselves more than we should, I know I have in the past years and it’s a habit that I need to break. The only obstacle that bars us from achieving our goals is, you guessed it, the man or woman we greet everyday in the mirror. John F. Kennedy stated that the only thing to fear is fear itself, so having a fear of failure is a lame excuse for not doing anything because how can we fail if we do not try. I’m not a preacher or a motivational speaker, I’m just your everyday guy trying to climb his way to the top, and I know I’m not alone. You can be anything you want in life, and you shouldn’t let a bad experience deter you from grabbing the bull by the horns and controlling your destiny. Will you lead or be led by someone who doesn’t have your best interests at heart? Think about it, I’ll wait….

I agree with what was written and I am the same way. I try to tell myself that along with “if you don’t believe in you, who will” mantra. But it is easier said than done.
Mikey McFly is that guy!
