The 2009 BET Awards in Video | Award show review: higlights and low lights lol

June 29, 2009

bet-logoThe good, the bad, the ugly. The BET Awards. Chad Bell did his BET Awards Review earlier, and was met with mixed opinions from the readers. Most felt that the Awards were absolute trash while Mr. Bell felt that the show was a good production. Myself, i feel that the Awards were lacking, but in this day and age most awards shows are exactly that, lacking. Even without the tributes the show would have lacked, to be honest, all award shows suck!

I thought Jamie could’ve done a better job. Im not at all sure if his funny was diluted by the producers, or if the tense climate that MJ’s death created sombered the show, but the Jamie Foxx i was expecting only briefly showed up. One highlight was the movie trailer spoof with classic TV characters from our past, Shenaynay (from “Martin”) and Wanda (from “In Living Color”) brought Martin Lawrence and Jamie Foxx to the awards. However fictious it was, it was a great moment. They should play on that and actually make that into reality.

Unfortunately i felt there weren’t too many other highlights, short of the Ojays’ Eddie Levert slipping up and dropping a nice profane word on us that BET was too slow to catch. (BET was piss poor in their attempts at censoring Lil Wayne also).

Seeing the Ojays get down was another highlight of the evening, its a shame that these old dudes out did most of the young performances of the night. Jay-Z was another “classic” artist (i say classic instead of old) who out did the youngin’s, especially Young Money’s garbage of a show. Im a Drake fan, and i guess i give Drake a pass having hurt himself, but their set was confusion at BEST. Which doesnt surprise me though, their performance at Spring Break was just as sh*tty.

Jamie Foxx moonwalking was entertaining, as was his MJ tribute attire, but the rest of the tribute’s were poor attempts:

I understand the timing made it difficult to put together GREAT tributes, but i feel like rather than two or three tributes BET could have concentrated their efforts on one GREAT tribute and gave Mike his just due. And in classic BET fashion, they definitely didnt hesitate to give themselves a pat on the back for what they thought was a great show, and tribute.

Keri Hilson’s performance was a stand out, but thats not saying much compared to the others.

The Addition of the Queen [Latifah] to Mary Mary’s set was surprising and well done, but her constant dropping of her album title and date during the after show was annoying.

As im currently writing this im noticing that Viacomm is taking videos down from EVERYWHERE. (If you want to see footage from the show go to BET.com, of course their videos dont allow you to embed, how stingy!) So i wont conitune posting videos that may or may not be up when you read this. But what i will say in conclusion is this. the BET Awards 2009, with or without the MJ tributes, were and would have been a mockery. But, i say BUT, they are in good company as ALL awards shows are terrible. Dont feel bad world they just dont love us like they used to.

Keeping up with the Jones’ | Sidekick 2008 Review

July 30, 2008

tmobile-sidekick-2008-live-6Ok so just when most of yall went out and bought the iphone v2.0 tmobile has somewhat quitely released the Sidekick 2008. This sidekick doesnt look much different than the LX, almost the way the iphone doesnt look much different than its predesesor. There are some noticeble differences but most are minor. For me, its not worth the upgrade, im fine with the one i have, just as im fine with my good ol’ metal back iphone that doesnt crack when i drop it, like the plastic one will. Only thing is when walking through metal detectors i sound off every time.

IF you must, and i do mean MUST have the new sidekick at least check out the reviews first.

Sidekick 2008 Review

The Bad News
Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat. The Sidekick 2008 is not 3G. It’s on the slower EDGE network like the other recent Sidekicks. Those of you still waiting for a super fast Sidekick 3G will just have to keep waiting. If that’s a deal-breaker for you, then you may not want to waste your time with the rest of this review.

Screen
One of the most important aspects of the Sidekick is the screen and its familiar flip. It’s still here. The screen on the Sidekick 2008 is the same high resolution (400×240 WQVGA) as the Sidekick LX, but it is a bit smaller in size (2.6? instead of 3?). This actually results in crisper images and much nicer web browsing and picture viewing on the device. You don’t have as big of a picture, but for most of the things you use a Sidekick for, you won’t even notice. Plus you shave off a tiny bit of weight and size. Screen gets a thumbs up.

Keyboard & Buttons
The keyboard on the Sidekick 2008 is very similar to the Sidekick LX. However the keys are ever so slightly smaller, but typing on it is still as easy as ever. That’s one thing that no phone on the market has been able to compete with, the Sidekick’s keyboard. I was a bit concerned with the keyboard size at first, but it hasn’t been too much of an issue. It just might take some getting used to.

Weight
One of the things I noticed about the 2008 instantly was that it was significantly lighter than the other Sidekicks. As I was carrying it around I sometimes completely forgot that it was in my pocket. I broke out the scale to get some real world measurements and found that it weighed 4.8oz, the same as the new iPhone 3G. Compare this with 5.7oz for the LX, 6.4oz for the Sidekick 3, 6.49oz for the Sidekick II, and a whopping 7.0oz for a Color Sidekick. If you’re still using a Color Sidekick, it’s time to upgrade.

Shells
One of the biggest selling points of the Sidekick 2008 is shells. These simple pieces of plastic are what can turn your phone from ordinary into something flashy and fashionable. T-Mobile will be selling all sorts of standard shells, in a typical range of colors. The device we got our hands on came with a yellow-green shell (like we’ve been seeing in all the Sidekick Gekko graphics) as well as a more subtle black one. The small parts of the device that aren’t covered by the shell (the screen frame, keyboard, and buttons) are a nice simple black as well. Yes, that’s right, right out of the box all you goth kids can finally have a black Sidekick without having to customize it. T-Mobile is also going to have a site where you can create your own shells, share them with others, and buy these custom shells. The shells are going to be created by Skinit.com and we hope they’ll be as nice of quality as the shells that come with the device. We’re also eager to see what sort of shell + custom theme combos people do with their devices. Maybe if T-Mobile doesn’t have a contest, we’ll throw one. Pricing for the shells from T-Mobile is $14.99 for two for $9.99 each.
6-250x300

So as far as im concerned, you can maintain with your good ol LX. The 2008 isnt much of a difference to spend two fill-ups on a phone. I can gas up the charger two or three times on the price of that sidekick. in 2008 i need every drop of gas i can get. lol
