“Do You” | Guest blogger Mikey McFly

kanye-west-spinThey do it and we follow, it’s that simple. The whole idea of being “trendy” has become somewhat detrimental to the human condition. Who remembers growing up wanting to be like their favorite musician, movie star or athlete and trying your best to imitate their every move. As a kid, I used to wear my Starter caps backwards while doing the running man dance like nobody’s business because the other kids said I was “cool”. The Media has had a massive influence on the way we live our lives to the point of losing the depth of our own perception.

Please understand that when I refer to media I’m not referring to the outlets like MSNBC or CNN but MTV, BET, and any other publication that targets a specific demographic. Popular culture is a monster that feasts on individuality especially when knowledge of self isn’t one’s priority. For example, some women may look at magazines and desire to resemble a model physically and may go to great lengths of desperation to achieve something that could very well cause them harm. Men are just as flawed. We try our best at times to compete with each other by “stunting” or “ballin” but at the end of the day, that little bit of shine won’t last forever.
So what is the point that I want to get across? Do You! You will gain a greater appreciation for yourself if you stay in your line and ride until the wheels fall off.  If you want to wear tight jeans like Kanye West, do it because you actually enjoy the feel and not because you think it will increase your chances at acceptance. People go their entire lives dwelling in the shadows of others while dismissing the great things that make them unique. Like Clifford Harris so eloquently said “Live Your Life”. You only get one chance to make an impression, so make the mark you leave is yours and Xeroxed.
